How do I enroll my child at a Silver CSD school?
Questions/answers
What is the average class size in your schools?
Our superintendent works with school principals to establish a reasonable teacher/staff-to-student ratio. In accordance with state requirements, our class loads are as follows:
Elementary – The average class load for kindergarten is 20 students. Any teacher with a class load of 15 to 20 students is entitled to an instructional assistant. The average class load for first, second, and third grades is 22 students, with a provision that first grades with more than 21 students will be provided an instructional assistant. The average for grades four and five should not exceed 24 students. Please note that these are averages amongst all classrooms at each grade level and at each school.
Secondary – The daily teaching load for grades seven through twelve does not exceed 160 students per day, except in English courses. Middle school English classes cannot exceed 135 students, with a maximum of 27 students per class. High school English courses cannot exceed 150 students, with a maximum of 30 students per class. (Districts may exceed the maximums by obtaining an approved waiver filed with the Public Education Department.)
What should I do if my child will be absent from school? And what constitutes an excused absence?
We firmly believe that regular school attendance, besides being required by state law, is essential for success in school; therefore, we will only excuse absences for necessary and important reasons. We require written parental/guardian explanations in order to excuse students for the following reasons (among others):
A child’s illness (must be verified after three days or more with a note from a health care professional)
A medically mandated quarantine regarding a contagious disease
Bereavement for an immediate family member
A medical appointment (verified by a note from the physician or physician’s appointee)
Family emergencies that, in the judgment of the superintendent or designee, constitute a good and sufficient cause for absence (school administrators may excuse students for necessary and justifiable reasons)
Observance of a major religious holiday of the family’s faith
School-sponsored activities
If you know in advance that your child will need to be absent, please inform the school office with a signed note or by telephone. If we do not receive notice prior to the absence, we require a note within 24 hours of the student’s return to school.
For more information regarding our attendance policy, we encourage you to review the student handbook.
Do you provide transportation services?
Our Transportation Department provides reliable and safe transportation for eligible students to and from school (and school-related events when they arise). Bus riding is a privilege, and we encourage all participating students to follow the rules we have put in place to ensure the safety of our students and the smooth operation of our buses. Please visit our Transportation page for information regarding bus routes and regulations.
What is the dress code at Silver CSD schools?
We encourage all students to take pride in their attire as it relates to the school setting. Students should dress in a manner that takes into consideration the educational environment, safety, health, and welfare of self and others. Each of our schools may exceed the district dress code requirements with more specific restrictions or conditions. For detailed information about the dress code at your child’s school or for clarification of the district policy, please contact the individual school.
Do your schools offer breakfast and lunch?
We operate an excellent nutrition program. Our schools serve breakfast, free of charge, to all students. Lunch is available daily for purchase, and we also offer free or reduced-price lunch for those who qualify. Check out our Food Services page for all the details.
